Porto Alegre Facts
Porto Alegre is the 10th most populous municipality in Brazil, and the capital city of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. Porto Alegre is one of the most important cultural, political and economic centers of Southern Brazil. Two Mercosul countries, Argentina & Uruguay, border Rio Grande do Sul. It is also the centre of Brazil's fourth largest metropolitan area.
Porto Alegre was founded in 1742 by immigrants from the Azores, Portugal. In the late 19th century the city received many immigrants from other parts of the world, particularly Germany, Italy, & Poland. The vast majority of the population is of European descent.
The city lies on the eastern bank of the Rio Guaiba (Guaiba Lake), at the point where five rivers converge to form the Lagoa dos Patos (Lagoon of the Ducks), a giant freshwater lagoon navigable by even the largest of ships. Located at the junction of five rivers, it has become an important alluvial port as well as one of the chief industrial & commercial centers in Brazil.

The gaucho capital has a privileged location. A strategic point within Mercosur, Porto Alegre is the geographical center of the major routes of the Southern Cone and it is located at equivalent distance both from Buenos Aires and Montevideo, as well as from São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro cities. Whoever arrives there meets an important business center and the gateway to the major tourist attractions in the region.
Whoever strolls along Porto Alegre’s streets is surprised with its perennial vegetation, hills, & ponds. What is also dazzling is the preservation condition of its historic buildings, which shelter memories and culture. But what really charms visitors is the surprisingly harmonious match of its welcoming manner of an interior town with the fast hustle and bustle of a large urban center, its architecture as the icon of modernity & the cultural heterogeneity.
Such is Porto Alegre, past and present constantly balanced – always accompanied by barbecue and a tasteful chimarrão.
