Rio de Janeiro Facts
Rio de Janeiro, among the southern hemisphere’s most alluring destinations with world-class hotels and resort accommodations, is famed for beaches with names known the world over, from Copacabana to Ipanema. Most visitors to Brazil start or end their journeys in Rio de Janeiro, and just as logically most leisure visitors tend to gravitate toward shoreline charms. Even so, further exploration in historic downtown neighborhoods of Centro, Lapa, and Santa Teresa provides rewarding exposure to narrow cobblestone streets, grand plazas, and buildings of baroque, beaux-arts and Art Deco charm.

Rio de Janeiro nightlife, heavy on samba music, pulsates year-around reaching peaks during Rio Carnival. Other magnetic attractions include the oft-photographed Sugar Mountain, the Christ Statue on Corcovado Mountain, and the Viceroy’s Palace. Rio de Janeiro Hotel options range from palatial, big splurge hotels along Copacobana and Ipanema beachfronts to more modest hotels situated inland.

Carnival in rio de JaneiroRio de Janeiro is famous for its natural settings, its Carnival Celebrations, samba and other music, and hotel-lined tourist beaches, such as Copacabana and Ipanema, paved with decorated black and cream swirl pattern mosaics known locally as "pedra portuguesa". Some of the most famous local landmarks in addition to the beaches include the giant statue of Jesus, known as Christ the Redeemer ('Cristo Redentor') atop Corcovado mountain, which has recently been named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World; Sugarloaf mountain (Pão de Açúcar) with its cable car; the Sambódromo, a giant permanent parade stand used during Carnival and Maracanã stadium, one of the world's largest football stadiums.

The city also boasts the largest and second largest urban forests in the world: Floresta da Tijuca, or "Tijuca Forest".
Antônio Carlos Jobim International Airport connects Rio de Janeiro with many Brazilian cities and also operates several international flights.

Rio De Janeiro History

Rio de Janerio was founded in 1565 by the Portuguese as a fortification against French privateers who trafficked wood and goods from Brazil. Piracy played a major role in the city's history, and there are still colonial fortresses to be visited. The Portuguese fought the French for nearly 10 years, both sides having rival native tribes as allies

Carnival in Rio de JaneiroStill the greatest reason for visiting Rio de Janerio seems to be the Carnival. This highly-advertised party lasts for almost two weeks and it is well known for the escolas de samba (samba schools) that parade in Centro, on a gigantic structure called Sambódromo (Sambadrome). During Carnival, Rio de Janerio has much more to offer though, with the blocos de rua, that parade on the streets. There are now hundreds of these street "samba blocks", that parade almost in every neighborhood, especially in Centro and the South Zone, gathering thousands of people. Some are very famous, and there are few cariocas that have not heard of "Carmelitas", "Suvaco de Cristo", "Escravos  da Mauá" or "Simpatia É Quase Amor".
